This coin is well very strange for any San Francisco minted coin. I know what it is but I wish to see opinions, this is an "I" clashed 1921 S coin.

It looks like the scratches are from the die, no? Seeing as they continue on either side of the olive branch the eagle is holding.

What would have caused such bad scratches on the die, though?

Looks like a really aggressively polished die and a fresh strike. Probably to remove a clash.
Rest in Peace

Those over-polished dies are some of my favorites! I've been grabbing up every die filed variety I can find lately ;) And an I clash to boot, that is one great one - congrats Russ.

Well you folks are right, this coin is not cleaned. This is one the harshest polished dies in all of the Morgan dollar series. This coin was in a junk bucket at a show, the dealer had it priced as a Cull.

The polishing is from where the lip, nose and chin clashing was removed. I will try to post a photo that has more light.

Nice junk bin pick Russ. That thing looks like it was roughed up with a file.

That really is terrific. An example of the need for high quantity production trumping quality control.

I too find some remarkable specimens being passed over as "culls" and "commons" and this often by dealers who are supposed to know their stuff.
