Finding a 1950D is a random event; don't recall finding the first one and almost overlooked the second. I've done around 40 boxes since restarting the CRH activity.
Not a newbie...just rather fortunate. If I had to guess, both were found within 50 or so boxes searched.

Have found about 5 50d or so. Completely random. Same as rackster some were close together, it has been a long time now
Did a whole bag this week - 1 war, 1 buffalo, and a nice lamination that was posted in error section

one box. Sometimes when coin roll hunting, you have that time where you smash a spectacular home run. Some days you're happy with a broken bat single. Today was a broken bat single day. 1939 1939 1942-D 2009-P also snagged a 2015-D hole filler. Don't see too many D's in this P area of the country. and a few miscellaneous 57-62 P's and pre-1957's.   |

6/21 CRH results A little different this time. I did my pickup at the bank and the teller handed me an additional $22 of CWR to go with the box. It ended up that 5 of the 11 rolls were mixed 1960-1964 P&D uncirculated coins. One roll has the original Cleveland bank wrapper of 1964Ps. I still need to go through all of them to see if I have any varieties but that should keep me busy through the week. Regarding the box, it was decent as well (good actually, but after the box two weeks ago, it didn't have that 'punch'). Here are the results: (2) Buffalo: partial date 1926 and a dateless (4) 30s: one 1939 in Fine condition (33) 40s: more than usual with 2 War Nickels (43P and 45P) (44) 50s: 1951S and (2)1952S (2 more holes filled for the 2015 project) (200+) 60s: still need to evaluate the CWRs, but pulled 7 1964 Proofs from the box (7) Foreign: 6 Canadian (1) Double headed nickel; Magicians coinGiven the higher number of 40s and 50s, it was a good box. pulled a beat up partial date 1923 yesterday, and a well worn buff with an S on the back. Nic a date revealed this to be 1916s, which is be a hole filler, despite the nic-a-date.

Interesting wear and toning Kid. Most 2000Ds I see are unusually shiny. Jbuck - thanks. I pulled about 50 keepers from the 200 or so 60s specimens. Quite a few 1964PD picks. One of the 7 wasn't a proof but probably from a mint set. And two of the six proofs were DDR. So I'm quite pleased. Skibs - nice on the S mint buffalo. Found out my dateless was a 1917P. I already had one in my pickeled Buffalo nickel set. Yours will hold the spot for now. Good luck on the hunt! |

Why are nickel rolls so much tighter (harder to get coins out) than rolls of other denominations?

It's all in the technique, grasshopper. Try a slow press on the top side of the end coin to get an angle going. Push evenly with a light grip of the roll/wrapper in your other hand. Use a blunt end of a sharpie pen to push the balance out of the wrapper. Should come pretty easily.
I noticed the same thing at the start but after mastering this technique, most pushes end up getting the coins out while not wrinkling the wrapper (which isn't a goal; just an outcome). Good luck grasshopper!!

That's it Garoyn. If you squeeze too much, it'll bind. But a loose grip (like golf I suppose) and pressing the end nickel to create the angle usually works every time. If it doesn't, check to make sure the open end isn't still doubled over. Usually a soft twirl of a toothpick to lift the second fold will complete the open end so the opposite ender can tip freely.
PS - I never thought I'd be offering tips on getting the nickels out of a MWR, but I knew exactly what you meant regarding the tight pack. I had a good chuckle!
