I'm visiting my brother in Chicago and last night we did a box together. One 1944 P, a 1950, a 1951D a 1948S, and a 1918 or 1928 S buffalo. Nothing from 2009.
Some nice finds.

This is my first time roll hunting American coins. My father travels around Western Canada weekly, but rarely visits the U.S. This past week, he travelled to Alaska and Seattle. He was able to get two machine rolls of nickels from a bank for me.

Hole fillers: 1972D, 1980P, 1984P, 1993P. 2010P.
Upgrades: 1974D (with minor rotation error), 1982D, 1986D, 1993D, 1996D, 1997D.

Nothing super special, but coins I needed. Oldest were only 1964D and 1968S. I will probably get more when he goes again near the end of August.

Just finished box 5 today - new to me are 1940-D (found 2, both corroded/dirty, hoping I find a clean one someday), 1 War Nickel, and a 1968 S proof. Not many unfound clads with mintages > 10 mil left. The rarest nickel I have thus far had about 11 mil mintage. Once I get at least 1-2 of the sub-10 mil nickels, I will have some basis for trying to project how many coins I'll have to search to find the others. I believe that current availability doesn't scale precisely with historical mintage figures as some have previously opined; the rarer mintages tend to be hoarded, and also the war/silver nickels are clearly not found in the wild in anything like the rate you would expect in comparison to the clad coins, again due to hoarding/melting.

Finally got around to doing a box of nickels and I'm happy I did:

Hole Filler: 1942-S
Upgrade: 1959-P, 1972
20 - Pre 1960
1 Bermuda, 2 Canadian nickels
1 Dateless Buffalo
1 2009-P

I don't think I'll wait as long until the next box.
Happy Hunting!

Those are correct insights and can be explained using the concept of circulation obsolescence.

You can read some thoughts on the topic ... and gain some insight into the likelihood of a modern day CRH finding Jefferson nickels at this thread:

Best of wishes in your nickel searching!

Nice on the upgrades folks! Always nice to make an incremental improvement!

7/27 results for boxes #16 and #17

4000 nickels searched
(7) 30s - 1 '38 and 6 '39s
(19) 40s - '40 with AU details, '41D, and (2)'48Ds
(24) 50s - nothing remarkable
(1) 60s - '68S in nice condition
(3) 70s - '71D in AU
(1) 2009
(4) Error/Variety - clashes
(11) Foreign - a few fish and mix of others

A bit below average for both boxes; their combined affect is a typical box on the norm. But some interesting finds. Too bad on the 1940; it was an ender. Here are the fun finds -

Thanks folks!

Jd - I'm desperately looking for the elusive '39D and get excited when I see the date. But so far no D. The nice thing about these 6 is that I kept 5 of them. Normally they go back into circulation but these were Fine or better. The '38 was in Fine condition as well so a bonus there. I was sad when I flipped the '40 to see the roller marks since most of the stairs were there. But I kept that one too. So a few keepers out of the finds. Normally I only keep a few so 'quota-wise' I mad my usual number. I'm hoping for better the next turn though. I've been spoiled of late and I fear my expectations might be inflated. But it's good to dream a bit!

Happy hunting folks!
