Numisma - nice on the V nickel. Does it have a date? Nickelitus - one of the best things my brother and I did was to hoard some coins back in the 70s/80s. 35 years later I search those coins for varieties. I'd have never guessed...

Quote:Numisma - nice on the V nickel. Does it have a date? That was sort of a joke. At the bottom of the post I mentioned that it was one of the Canadian commemorative coins (2005). Still a neat find in the states, though. I finished searching a while ago, but haven't been able to post yet. Here's the tally: 119 pre-1968, including 2 silvers Less common dates: 1948-S, 1949, 1955 One 1961 that looked like a cameo proof, then turned out to have a D MM 2 2009-D 5 Canadian 1 Singaporean 20 cent piece

1 more that I forgot: A 2006-D that appears to have been struck on a type 1 (no rim) blank- little to no rim definition

I think so too. I wasn't really expecting anything much- I was only at the bank to bring back some coins and transfer $500 from a different account, but I asked if they had any boxes. The teller said no, I had to order them (I'll do that soon), but she had 6 rolls on hand.

And I found my 7th (?) NRA counter stamped nickel. Happy Hunting folks!

My last three boxes have all been skunks. Back to a drought again.

Thanksgiving around the corner and your son will be home. Hopefully your luck will improve by then. That said, your 'skunking' only means you didn't find a sub 10 million coin, Buffalo, War, or V nickel. I'm sure that there were a couple variety coins in that box should you ever elect to hunt them. Happy hunting!

Quote: 30s: 3 (1939) Nice! I didn't get any in my box, but I got one in the six rolls I got yesterday. I've noticed that the Red Book lists higher prices for 1982-P&D, 1983-P&D, 1984-P and 1986-D. Why is that? I find dozens of all of these dates.

1939P nickels are easy to find. But finding high grade coins for the dates you posted are more difficult. Plenty of circulated coins for those dates but usually they are EF/XF or worse. MS coins for those dates are rare during a CRH event. For 82 and 83 I believe they didn't issue mint sets so all high grades come from business strike die sets.
I found a nice 1982P in this box. Unfortunately it was an ended and received a bit of roller damage. I think maybe 3 steps too. I kept it anyway. Sharp lettering and a bit of luster left.

In my first batch I thought would keep those dates, but before long I had a coffee cup full and I decided that they weren't worth holding on to.

You are right. Most aren't. But keep your eye open for quality specimens. I keep AU and better for those dates. AU+ really.
