Hey All,
I find nickels in the 30s (not buffs), 40s, and 50s semi-often. I used to keep them, but I have so many, what do you all do with them? Sell them (if so how), toss them back, or upgrade and toss the lesser condition back?

What I'd do with your hoard is to go through them and keep: Higher grade specimens to build a roll by date/MM Variety specimens ( DDO / DDR, RPMs, OMMs, transitional designs) Errors You could try to sell them on the bay, but for me, I just roll them up and send them back to the bank. Good luck! |

Wow, reading this thread brings back memories of nickel hunting. I have to go out and get another box soon.

On average, I only get about 1.5X face for common 1939-59 Nickels whenever I sell them, and with the fees, drops the margin down to around 1.3X for a full box. Because of this, I'd seriously consider saving higher grade nickels (VF or better for 1939/the 40s, and EF or better for the 50s). Unlike cents, they still circulate and can be used in most vending machines and even some parking meters. An increasing amount of early Jeffersons are starting to show wear on the rims with many Gs and a few AGs starting to surface. If V nickels and to a degree Buffaloes have noticeable premiums in higher grades, there is no reason it should surface on Jeffersons. Otherwise, dump the common date, lower grade coins and use any profits for something else. BTW see the Dime thread for my results today, and I found a couple tougher dates. |

I decided to start a Jefferson set. Bought 3 albums. Opened up 1 box of nickels and found about 90% of the collection in one box. I have all the War Nickels in circulated condition. There are a few keeping me from completion 2015d (I am in ny so I probably won't see any til next year) 50d, and a few others. Maybe I'll find some more in the other box I have yet to search tomorrow. I managed to fill all the 40s holes with a old roll with purchased with a coin sale including coming with tougher dates 49s, 55p, with low mintages under 10 million. Good luck with searching. Oh also I found a 1929 buffalo in box 1. I may start a Wheat cent set, since I am running out of stuff to buy that I can afford via silver coins. |

Nice surprise from 5 rolls today. 39, 41, 47-S, 47-D, about a dozen or more 40s & 50s plus my first ender - a 43-P.

Wow! That would be incredible to find all the wars in a box! I thought the OP got these as an adjunct in a purchase.

I have 48 rolls to open from box 2. First roll I open I finally find a 2015D, so just need 2009PD (which I know are harder to find cause of low mintage and most were supposedly sent to puerto rico.) Hopefully will finish the 50's and 60's with this box as well as luckily finding a 50D and some harder dates like 38ds, 39ds, etc.

Good luck with finishing, but I doubt you'll get a 50-D that quick. Still, with your luck- maybe. The 2009-PD should not be all that hard to find, though.
