I just passed through 130,000 nickels searched ...... and still lack the same 4 coins ..... 38s, 42s, 43d and 44d. Someday these will show up .... I am coming to the conclusion it's a matter of volume of searching. Good score ratman on the 39d and congrats on your 2nd full set. I'm still working to complete my initial humble Whitman 9009 from circulation.  David Edited by nickelsearcher

Agreed that they will eventually show up. I've found 2 38s and a 42s in 47K nickels searched but I am also on the west coast which makes them a little more common over here. No 43 or 44d's however.

I went through 15 bank rolls today, pulled only 6 pre-1960's but also a 1907 V-Nickel in Good condition!

I searched through the 10 worst N.F. String & sons rolls ever yesterday. All I got was 3 common date 1950s. I've had better luck with the Brinks rolls since as many have stated, people are really pulling out the stops and dumping coins jars these days.

Today 33 Brinks, 5 String and about 60 customer wrapped rolls gathered from several banks. Not a good day, 1 War Nickel (45P) and approximately 300 (probably more) pre 1960. (I apparently grabbed some rolls turned in by a cash strapped nickel searcher who turned in several rolls of lower grade common dates with no silver). Hopefully tomorrow will be better! |

Today 1 Brinks box + 30 rolls and 22 customer wrapped yielded 2 War (42P, 43P) and a 1955! Also 56 other pre 1960.

 After putting away this months roll finds Come to find out that I didn't need the 1939D after all I need the 1939S I wont complain about the 1939D, it's a better date than the one I need.....but I really wanted to complete that set |

You'll get there again ratman .... no worries I say.
My news is a lovely 1938-p AU 55+ Jefferson that I found tonight in a roll ...... some of you will recall my frustration with not finding this date through well over 100,000 coins searched.
Well .... in the previous month or so I now have five of them ..... and this latest in an eye-pleasing upgrade to my Whitman.
Still need four to complete my Whitman ..... will keep searching.

Finished up a box last yesterday. Results.
22 - Pre-60's
2 - War (44P, 45P)
1919 Buffalo (was really trying to find the S MM, no luck)
Still trying to achieve my goal of 40 wars for the year, this was number 35.

Just started nickels! Had to have my corrected by a eye surgeon after doing a boxes of dimes. Started plugging empty slots in the albums I purchased for nickels. Any years in particular I should be looking for and should be keeping above and beyond what is needed for my set? Thanks in advance for your help!  |

Dimes are rough on my eyes too! Definately save the Silver War Nickels (42-45) as they are worth around $1.00 melt value. Alot of us hoard the pre 1960 nickels. If you check the mintage figures you'll know which ones to hang on to. (They will probably be the last 10 or 12 holes in your album)...LOL. And of course any Buffalo or Liberty nickels that should come your way. (1938D,1938S,1939D,1939S,1942D,1950,1950D,1051S,1955) Edited by ratman4762

Theoretically nickels back to 1866 should be findable, though none of use here as found a Shield nickel yet in a roll. Also look out for errors, they are much more common in nickels than any other series. Broken collars and Cuds are very findable once you've searched enough nickels. Also look out for the various varieties like the 55 d/s ect. There are also collectable Henning counterfits, that carry signifigant premium as well. 1943 (look for no mintmark on the back) and 1939 (look for a looped are on the back) are the easiest to spot, though there are other dates as well (these have less noticable die markers though and are notoriously hard to identify) You should also be on the look out for m/s 1982p's as they carry signifigant premium. XOG meant to say look for the 1944-P war silver with no mintmark on the back as a Henning counterfit ..... I agree HalfCrazy with Ratman list of keepers .... but would add the 1949-S with a mintage of 9.7 million to the 'keepers'. Many of us, as stated above, keep all finds dated 1959 and prior. No real value to the common dates ...... just makes a nice hoard to pass along for our children to deal with. IMHO the circulation strike Jefferson nickel series is the only current circulating set that a dedicated roll searcher can reasonably expect to complete. That does not mean it is a quick and easy quest ..... To date I have searched 132,000 nickels from rolls ..... have found 1,645 dated 1959 and prior (1.28% find rate) ..... and I still need 4 coins to complete my humble Whitman 1938-1961 collection. That said ..... it's great fun ..... the finds only cost you 5 cents ...... and you have a chance to discover some nice coins.
