I was pretty happy. Was a fed box. White / blue wrappers. Putting together a set. I'm surprised @ how far back you can reach those years compared to halves.

That's the nice thing about Jefferson nickels! The design hasn't changed until a few years ago. Makes it easier to find the older ones (although I believe more people are starting to hoard the old ones and that will change). Harder dates to find are 1938D, 1938S,1939D,1939S,1942D,1943D,1949S,1950,1950D,1951S,1955. The 50D will be a major accomplishment if you find one in circulation. (some members here have recently found them) They have been hoarded since their release in 1950 due to it being the lowest mintage. When found they are usually in pretty high grade due to them recently being put back into circulation by the unknowing. 1939D is the second lowest mintage. 1943D is the lowest mintage silver nickel and will be the toughest war year to find. I've been having better luck with the Brinks boxes (plastic wrapped) than with the String rolls (blue on white paper). But I imagine it varies in different parts of the country. All the Buffalo, Liberty and War Nickels I've found have come from Brinks. Although the Strings did produce a couple of 1938 for me. |

Nice find DylansDad! Out of the 219 War Nickels I've pulled from circulation through the years, I've only pulled 2 1943D, and they both reside in my 2 sets. |

185 rolls today (2 Brinks boxes+17, 1 String Box and 18 customer wrapped). A couple of firsts today! First GOOD String box I've ever had (3 Buffalo) and First 2009P from a Brinks Box (past 3 found from customer wrapped). So Total today 5 Buffalo (1936, 4 dateless) 3 War Nickels (42P,44P,45D) 2009P, Better dates (1955-2), 1938 XF, 1959D AU, and 95 other Pre 1960. The 1936 Buffalo was from the String box. |

Not really. I made a silver calculator that I use as an inventory. Any day that I find War Nickels or silver halves I add it to my inventory and plug in spot price. I have so many pre 1960 nickels I don't even try to keep up with them. I just seperate the better dates. If I find a nice proof or a better buffalo or V nickel, I'll mark it as a roll find with the date found. I was searching halves heavily but the silver has been getting hard to find around here, so I'm searching the heck out of nickels because they have been good lately. When the weather gets nice again I need to take a road trip! |

120 rolls today (brinks box and 70 customer wrapped) Didn't have high hopes from the start due to the high number of customer wrapped (but I take what I can get). Customer wrapped yielded 2 War (1943P) and a vf 1938. Brinks yielded a 1920 Buffalo and a MS 1963. Total of 50 other pre 1960. There were about 10 rolls that had nothing newer than 1987 and I was able to put away a few ms 1985, 1986 and 1987.

Picked up 2 boxes today. Ran thru one this evening and pulled 28 pre 1960 (including a stunning '58D). No War Nickels... My bank had 9 boxes of nickels. Think I will pick up a couple more with the 15 to 20 inches of snow due here in the next couple days... |

Good Job HalfCrazy! It is addicting! Especially when you start pulling Buffalos and War Nickels. You don't want to stop! I also like finding the "stunning" older coins. I've been finding alot of early 60's MS coins. Even found a couple early 60's proofs. |

Here's a question for ya Ratman, how do you tell a non-S-Mint proof? Do they jump out at you as mirrored like the more recent ones? I've been through about 8-10 nickel boxes and haven't (to my knowledge) found any yet. I have set a couple early 60's ones aside that seem to have much sharper rims, but aren't necessarily any more mirrored.

DylansDad, I've been findind alot of early 60's MS coins. The 2 proofs I found exhibit a much sharper strike with full steps. Today 120 rolls (Brinks box +10, String box and 10 customer wrapped). Pretty bad all the way around. MS 1962 from String box, 1945P War Nickel from Brinks and total 46 other pre 1950. I've had better days. |
