I did a box tonight and had three silvers (1942-P, 1943-P, 1944-P) and a 1938-P.  On to the next box! |

Found a 1936-S Buff tonight which is a hole filler. So now I have found 45/65 buffs.

Well, I finished my box. At first I didn't think it was going so well, but then I cracked open roll 36 and this popped right out.  I saw the obverse first, and was hoping for a mintmark as I turned it over. Although the picture isn't the best, you can see that the coin still has plenty of luster. The strike is nice and sharp, and the steps are nearly full. It just has a little wear on the high points. As my second 1939-S from CRH, this was a massive upgrade. It has a little spot of something over the date, so I may try some acetone on it. Oddly enough, the lone 1939 (plain) in the box was in the same roll. On the last roll in the box, I got another low mintage coin, my third 1949-S, which brought the total number of 1949-S examples higher than 1949 plain. Pre-1960 (18): 1939 1939-S (upgrade)  1940 1941-S (small S) 1946 1948 1948-D 1949-S1952 1953-S 1954 1954-D x2 1954-S 1957-D x4 Canadian (4): 1987 x2 1994 2000 2016-P (my first, there was only one in the box) 2009-D 1960-D bar 1999-D stickered I also upgraded my 1961. Yinzi50, nice Buffalo! Great that you're only 20 coins short of the set now. Nice work!
And Numisma, that's a beautiful 39-S! Congrats! Looks like it's maybe an AU-58 or even a slider Unc. That feeling you get when you turn over a 38 or a 39 Jefferson and find a mintmark is awesome! When I found my AU 39-D last month, I saw the obverse first as well.

I would probably agree with AU-58, maybe 55. I would have preferred a 39-D, as that would have filled a hole, but I'll sure take this. It certainly made my box.

Yeah, it's hard to base a grade on just 1 photo each of the obverse and reverse. I guestimated well! And yes, we all want that 39-D! I got so lucky! I'm guessing this is the "normal" 1939 reverse, and not the one of 1940, so it's probably worth around $13. Not a bad score! CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Thanks! It's actually in the best condition of any of the pre-1960 nickels in my Dansco (which, of course, represent the best of each date), with the 46-S and 47 coming in at second and third.
EDIT: I just took a look at the reverse, and this coin has the reverse of 1938, which appears to be rarer in AU.

The reverse of 1940 is the harder to find one on the '39-P and 39-S coins. However, on the '39-D, the older style (1938) reverse is more scarce. I'm inclined to believe you, but I was just basing my assumption off the values listed by PCGS, which indicate that the reverse of 1940 is more desirable in lower grades while it is the other way round in the AU range.  |

Tonight's box has three notable Philadelphia coins: 1936, 1939, and 1943. The 43 was pretty nice compared to most silver nickels I have seen in rolls.  i  |

And Coins Magazine has it just the opposite. How confusing! I think I need to get to my coin dealer and catch a look at the Coin Dealer Newsletter/Greysheet. 44 rolls yesterday produced a 44-S nickel amongst 24 pre-60s. Also found 5 09-Ds.  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
