Started another box last night.
I keep EVERY "S" mint nickel I come across......regardless of date or condition....does anyone else do this too ?
I guess I keep every nickel dated pre-1960 too......

I too keep every pre-60 nickel. As for the S mint nickels, I generally keep them unless they're so rough that they'd never possibly have any collector value. I'm still working on finding that happy medium between smart collector and hoarder...I haven't gotten there yet.
One of my first projects when I get around to it will be to go through my hoard and glean out the junk...pretty sure I'll still keep all pre-60's, but definitely have to glean some of the post-60 stuff I've held onto.

Aside from building the Westward Series folders from circulation, I also am putting together a coin tube full of each year and mintmark of the 5 different designs over the three years of these. Roll searching has helped greatly with this endeavor, obviously !.....got all the D's full.....only lacking half a tube each of the P's to be complete !...  And yeah....I too need to separate the ones that are as close to BU as I can get.....to the worthless (beyond .05 Cents anyway) junk ! |

Today 97 Brinks rolls. 1929 Buffalo, 4 War Nickels (43P,43P,43P,45P) Thus ends the 43P-less streak! Also a 1955. Edited by ratman4762

i do......I just like 'em - perhaps being on the east coast it makes them a lot harder to find Good luck you had tonight Ratman....4 War Nickels? Keep your eye out for that 43/2-P You must be on the east coast somewhere. Edited by mdh157

Scored a 1945 P out of my box ! .... .. (Stringer boxes ordered from bank is 99% what I get.) (Only done one Brinx box in my life) May have found an FS too..(1996 D)..but need to look at it more closely when I have time.....haven't previously looked for those.....still don't really. Plugged a few more holes too......(lower mintage ones in the 20-30 some million range !) No "foreign" nickels...  No Buff's.... No V's.... But just "one" War Nickel in a box is worthwhile to me ! ......  I must have 30,000 1970 S mint nickels too....... LORD ! Do I find a lot of those !! |

Eaglefoot, I don't know how often you find War,Buff or V's, but if you don't search Brinks boxes....you should try to get your hands on a couple and try your luck. Around here, String boxes aren't that good. I've been searching nickels heavily for a couple of months now and for the most part have had a steady stream of War Nickels coming in. One day when I was putting away the past months finds, I had gathered 34 War Nickels and 17 Buffalo (about half with dates)and a V. That was about 4 weeks of searching mostly Brinks. I try a String box now and then just to see if they've gotten any better....and can't wait for it to be over so I can get into the Brinks! |

I just had a fantastic box for me so thought I'd post some stats. Pulled three War Nickels: 42P, 45P, 45D Filled three holes in my 9009, including 42P(silver), 56, 58 and upgraded five others. Found a 42p in AU/BU with full steps So after searching 287 rolls I still need 17 for my folder, have pulled 14 war nicks, and only 1 dateless buffalo. Man this is fun. Edited by Pinenut

Very good ratio on the War Nickels (1 in 20.5 rolls). The War Nickels and Buffalos are what keeps me searching for my 1939S. If I ever run into a major dry spell I'll probably break down and buy it. |

Hey Ratman, The 39S is another one that I've been lucky on. I have two. Before you break down and buy it, I'd happily gift my extra to you. You and CND and nickelsearcher have really done an amazing and fun thing here. I love checking this thread and learning from you guys.
It's the least that I could do.

Thanks for the offer PineNut. When I started rollsearching nickels a couple of months ago, I needed 2 for my second set (39S and 55). I found the 55 quickly and about 5 others since then. I've always lived on the east coast and s mints are harder to find (especially lower mintage).

Icy weather equals Nickel roll searching! Got ten boxes before banks closed on Friday. 500 rolls 0 Buffalo; 2 Wartimers (43s,44P); 0 Proof; Keys and semi-keys: 2x38, 1x42d, 1x50d  177 coins of 59 or earlier;   This 50D is much better than last one I found. There are a lot of lusters remaining on the coin! The steps under the pillars are all intact. It must be hoarded for a long time. Total searched to date: 3200 rolls Edited by Yinzi50
