EFLargeCents,
Nice detective work! If I ever needed to get opinion on early cents, I would know who to ask here.

I'd be lost without all the decent people on this site.

OK, so we're talking about the long stem on the LIBERT(Y), and the hit on the breast area? Whoa, I'm sure NGC will be embarrassed to hear about this.

Wasnt my detective work. Just sharing some info for others to be aware of.
The Y in liberty is the most obvious give away. Ironically it is painfully obvious when comparing to the second coin on the page.

Why would the counterfeiter change the Y on the coin if it would be such a dead givaway? Has that been explained yet?

Die transfer process isn't perfect. Some tooling to fix weaknesses and the Y must have been the worst of it.

I thought the whole R T Y was out of proportion.

Perhaps many of you should stop throwing stones. No collector/dealer/TPGS is free from error. I've been in this profession long enough to have seen most of it from many sides. Ever hear of the fake Irish gold coin the first certification service authenticated as genuine? I think not. After the photo certificate was issued, every person who saw the coin could judge the result. Thankfully, more knowledgeable eyes caught the error. It's the same thing here. These coins are State-of-the-art. I'll guarantee there are specimens that have already been bought/sold to copper collectors/dealers LONG before one reached EACH OF the four major TPGS and was CERTIFIED as genuine! Nevertheless,99% of those throwing the rocks here couldn't identify a SOTA counterfeit coin from a donut! Let's try to stay positive in the face of this horrible situation. Our hobby is under attack. The TPGS is our military and they need our help. The collectors who watch ebay and can compare similar coins are using methods of C/F detection that were developed decades ago before most of you were born! TPGS don't have the time to do this (perhaps they should start :) The Internet age is our friend. When deceptive coins such as this hit the market decades ago it often took YEARS to realize they were fakes. Thanks to all the grownups for posting links and great photos.

PS I'm not speaking of the Posters and comments here. This is a continuation of the frist reports of the SOTA fakes that the TPGS posted several weeks ago. It's a good bet MORE fakes are out there to be discovered.

Thanks bobby... Great contribution. I hope you (and me) continue to learn from the "informed" posters here so that one day you too will be able to add your experience to the questions posted. Many of us have little money but experience and knowledge can be free (often acquired quicker if you pay for it) for those who wish to search and learn. I wish you a fun journey.

Quote: This is a continuation of the frist reports of the SOTA fakes that the TPGS posted several weeks ago. The TPGs? They posted about the fakes? I am pretty sure this recent round was brought to light by members of EAC and some others but not the TPGs.
