Hi everyone first of merry Christmas or happy holidays. I was wondering I just started collecting about six months or so ago and I've been paying roughly around 2$ for circulated silver dimes. Is that a fair price? I live in Indiana, where do you guys live and what do you pay? Just wanna make sure I'm getting a good deal. Thanks Justin

That's 20x face. Sounds a bit high. I'd aim as close to a buck a piece as possible. Should be able to get them for $1.50, or even $1.20.

The actual melt value of a US dime is $1.04 with silver at its current $14.38 value, so you shouldn't hope to pay less than $1. If the coins you are buying are in the VG-VF range with no serious flaws, you are paying fair money at around retail. If you were to visit your LCS or a pawn shop, you might score a roll of 50 random dates for $65-$70 or about $1.40 each.

The 1975 dime ( no mint mark means Philly mint) is worth 10 cents in circulated condition.

For the Mercs and the silver Roosies the local coin shops in my area sell them for 13X face in their junk silver bins. The Mercury dimes are mostly heavily circulated (Approx. G to VF) and I've occasionally been able to get BU Roosevelt dimes from these bins (mostly 1960's but a few in the late 1950's).

They let me pick and choose what I want which is nice.

That being said $2 apiece might be fair if they are especially nice, like early date Mercury dimes in decent condition.

Ok thanks for the input, unfortunately there isn't really any coin shops where I live except one in a flea market, and they are kinda high priced. Pawn shops around my area are outrageous on silver coins. I just joined the local coin club can't wait for the first meeting, hopefully I can get some info on some coin shops close by me.

I think $2.00 is to high

From a LCS $1.35 to $1.50 would be more fair.

From a individual, $1.00 to $1.30

What area of Indiana are you located in? Maybe some our Indiana members can make some recommendations on where to find competitive prices. You shouldn't have to pay $2 each for something that should be widely available for less.

I purchased a roll to start my Roosevelt dime set and filled all but maybe 10 spots from the silver roll. I sold the rest to pay for the 10 I needed. It was definitely under 20x FV

I live in Muncie Indiana. The place I've been buying my coins from charges what ever the Coin World magazine price is. Which seems high sometimes.

I've been working on filling a set of silver 1916-64 ('mercs and roosevelt) and only have 16d, 21 and 21d remaining... I paid 13-16x face for the majority. I did have a few trades as well.

I'd keep looking at LCS, I finally found a store that typically has 1000 dimes in junk and let's me take an hour to look through them all picking what I want...

Welcome Justin, I don't live too far away from you (Shelbyville)... I just posted a thread a week ago about buying silver "Rosie's" for $2 apiece and everyone there told me that was way too high and even $1.50 was a bit high... Might I suggest taking a drive (if possible) over to Silvertowne in Winchester which isn't too far at all of a drive for you and look at they have to offer.... Good luck!!
