Fairly decent strike and luster for a date-mintmark combo known for horrible strikes and lack of luster.

This 1896-O Morgan dollar (VAM-18) is in a PCGS holder; what grade would you give her?

Technically an AU53 or so it likely graded higher for the good strike/luster as you noted. I could see it in an AU58 holder or 55 at worst.

I'd be in the AU-55 camp.

Very close to mint state, with slight friction visible on the cheek and in the fields. I think AU-58 would be correct.

This is why it's good to be able to tell a slider from a true MS coin -- the value gap for this particular date between AU and MS is very large. If you were to buy one raw, thinking it was MS, and it came back AU, that wouldn't be a good thing at all. Most of CCF called it correctly as AU

This particular one is pretty baggy and nicked but with strong luster. It's not a super low mintage date or MM but for some reason when you get into MS the price goes nuts really quick.

This one has great luster, just too many contact marks. It should look fine in an Unc set at a fraction of the cost.
Rest in Peace

It's still a pretty big value coin at AU58. Did you purchase this one already graded?
