I was searching through a large bag of mixed circulated War Nickels this week, and I found nothing interesting until the third to the last coin. This is my first overdate, and as you might imagine, I'm pretty excited about the find!

Wow, if only my luck could be that good to be able to find an over-date like this one.

I usually have to end up getting lucky at an auction someday since I very rarely buy specific coins at a coin shop; the built-in overhead at these shops often makes it difficult to justify purchasing.

My MO is to just pass on the ones that appear to be to expensive since:

1) they'll most likely surface somewhere else at a better price or condition at the same price and

2) I won't die just because I didn't buy the more expensive one today...

John1, I hadn't even heard of the Henning nickel before you just mentioned it. Interesting story, though! I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if one was missing a MM.

This is not an over date. It is a doubled die. They wrong year hub was used on it. An over date is where the individual numbers are punched into the die. They occur on 19th century coins before they used s full hub to make the dies.
