Common issue in amongst the culls (and priced accordingly), but just way, way too nice to leave there, and also too interesting given the peculiarity it exhibits. If there's not already a VAM for this, there ought to be, as there's quite a noticeable alteration to the state of both dies.

Here's the result of the clash on the reverse -

1884-O,-Clashed-Dies

The corresponding evidence on the obverse isn't as prominent, but still clear enough -

1884-O,-Clashed-Dies

Obviously neither die had yet been retired subsequent to the incidence of the clash between them.

As interesting as I found this specimen to be, I feel I really should now apologize for having posting it here. In doing a bit more research, I discovered that, irrespective of my personal point of view, in general only die clashes involving letters are considered worthy of being assigned a VAM. So that exhibited by this coin, while very visible, seemingly wouldn't qualify.

In fact, it appears that most die clashes are actually regarded by many collectors as detracting from the value of a Morgan. But I'll still hold onto this one as a nice, clear example of the effects of a die clash.

Lucky Cuss, I think you hit the nail on the strike issues... not only is are there clashes but also rotations of the clashing. the OFF-ALIGHNMENT of the true strikes natural position, which causes imprints of the obverse and reverse to appear upon each others surfaces..
The general rule from MUCH FARTHER BACK than todays practices,,of additional poop and scratches for a VAM designation.......... WAS Letter transfer..
FOR the reverse few letters are found, the M near the beak and the E by the tail feathers, for the obverse, the I the N,S T as well as the O and D above the head, HOWEVER, many a clash that is strong has not resulted in a letter transfer, the basic rule, so no banana here, or VAM number........I have never seen so many NEW VAMS online at vamworld as I did today...but thats another story.....
