All these Ike post lately have gotten me thinking. I may be missing the ground floor on this coin series. I've been slowly building up my graded Ike set and today in my mailbox these were waiting. There are a couple of PR70 up for auction today at heritage, but I don't know if I can pull the trigger on a couple thousand dollar 70's era proof coin.

If I'm not mistaken, aren't MS-68 Ike dollars of any year that are NOT proofs extremely rare? It is my understanding that proof coins are common in that condition because they're NIFC, while coins for circulation generally don't survive in such pristine shape! I'm actually really surprised to see one graded that high - truly awesome coins!

Only the 71s silver business strike brings crazy money in 68.. The others need to be 69.. Now the copper clad Ike's are for sure big money in ms67

A lot of the years MS67 is the top graded coin (at this moment in time) for clad coins. The silvers as stated above MS69 are out there and MS68 are not to expensive. I could go big and grab one top pop coin, but I'd rather spend that extra money on other coins. I can live with 2nd best grade.

Holy cow! Nice!
I wanted to do PR69DCAM for all my Ike proofs, but a thing called "budget" got in my way.
The 1971 and 1972 (P and D mints) are tough to find above MS66/MS67 too.

1973 Ikes in true Gem are really tough. The biggest problem is marking and deep scratches but they also have trouble with strike deficiencies.
I really should buy me a few of them since finding them in mint sets is near impossible. Maybe about 1 in 300 is a true Gem. The Denver is little or no easier because of marking.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

You both make me feel a bit inadequate with my modest (yet complete) Dansco 8176.

I hear you, brother jbuck. I have like 8 circulated coins and raw proofs in my collection. The last coin is being shipped and then I can say mine is complete. I'm hoping the several different varieties and errors I have will make up for the humble condition of my collection.
