151936030784It won't sell (seller is using a reserve auction. How quaint!) Does this coin look authentic? It has some wicked reverse die clash but none on the obverse, and the denticles worry me... Edit: Seller also has this odd 1800 Dime listed: 161935299001I don't like the look of either of these. I don't like it. The bust doesn't look right. If anyone is going to try and sell a genuine coin that's worth more than a few dollars, they should post good, clear pictures. The fact that this is a fairly valuable coin and that the pictures are zoomed out implies that they may not want us to see everything.

Hmm... the toning looks fishy.

Newbie, just trying to make observations. The left breast (right side as looking at the coin) has a bump just before the covering which I do not see on photos of other 1805 quarters. Also, there is a depression in the neck on the right side (as you look at the coin) on the ebay coin where other 1805 quarter photos show the neck to be smooth. On the obverse the way the arrow nocks and fletchings surround the northwest corner of the 5 is slightly different on the ebay coin vs. photos of others.

Quote: I don't like the look of either of these. 1805 B-2 Obv. base of the T is wrong Rev. top of the 5 in 25 is wrong.

All the markers are there for a B-2. Weak "R" on the right side. The 5 is touching bust, the gap in denticles above the E in STATES. The die mark that looks like a scratch above the clouds on the right. It looks like it's been rubbed with a jewel cloth, but I don't think it's fake.

Is it possible for there to be such a strong reverse clash but nothing on the obverse? I was thinking fake made from mismatched dies, i.e. someone copied the reverse of one variety and married it to the obverse of another?

Not a coin I would buy. Too many red flags.

Wish it were real, as so few survived, but wouldn't bet my money on a bid.

It just has a "fake" sort of look to it, to me. Too clean. But I don't know this series well and am just chiming in for the heck of it.

The quarter looks pretty close to the real B2 variety, although the example I viewed on Heritage shows the left foot of T in Liberty is missing and the ebay coin shows a narrow but distinct left foot. That is enough of a concern to take the coin off my want list. Color is off but that could be from cleaning. The dime is less convincing. The eagle's beak and head look wrong and the surface around that area looks granular. I'd guess this one at least is a cast counterfeit.

Maybe Bobby can move this to the counterfeit forum.

I would like to see these in person before I make a sure decision. They are both iffy, but I can't tell for certain one way or another based on the photos.
