I am considering starting a date set, just years not complete mint marks, of certified Buffalo nickels in the 63-64 range. A few years ago I purchased my first BU Buffs and really like them. I just bought a 1935 (64) and started looking at other MS coins.

Looking through prices, it seems possible for me although it might take a couple of years.

I have an almost complete set, except the 1913 D and S type 2, In the G-VF range. Quite honestly some of the rarer dates don't do anything for me because they are low grades. I think I would rather have an MS more common date than a VG key date.

What does everyone think? Would any years present a particular problem? What are your thoughts on lower key date Buffs vs UNC common dates?

Thanks!

Grade wise, no problem. The set, possibly, will not "look" the same.

IMHO, Buffalo nickels are a tough series - because of the strike quality, that, year to year and mint to mint, vary quite a bit.

But, it would be a BEAUTIFUL set when you complete it!
Rest in Peace

I admit uncirculated Buffalos are real nice, some of them even no MM will be pricey. I'm working on a decent circ. set of Buff's G-6 TO EF-40 and I'm content with it. To each his own !

I think I got some good deals lately on VF Buffalo's including 1913-S and 1913-D, type two and all the other key dates except the 1937 three legged nickel. I got a VF-25 1913-S, type two for $425. I think buying the key dates in F+ or VF condition if they are certified is not a bad idea. Buying the full date/mint set in MS condition would not only be hard but mighty expensive. If you did buy them I bet in years to come they will appreciate if that means anything to you.
My feeling is that if you have a Buffalo nickel with a good date for key dates you are ahead. I think the Buffalo's, Mercury dimes, SLQ's and LWH's are going to appreciate if we can just wait. Every baby boomer remembers these coins fondly. Maybe rich old baby boomers will buy their grandchildren sets of Buffalo nickels. Don't you wish you grandpappy had given you a set of Morgans back about 40 years ago.
