What do you guys think the grade is on this coin? Does this coin look natural and untouched or do you think it has been cleaned or dipped at any time ?

Hi Pony95,
I like this one! The dark tone around the stars and legends sure looks original. The images are a bit blurry but I think I see a few hairlines on the obverse. These don't look serious. There is a touch of wear along Liberty's drapery and perhaps on the eagle's talons. The strike looks pretty full.

I think it deserves at least an AU-50 grade. Depending on how much luster remains, I could see it going as high as AU-55.

It is veery difficult to tell from the pictures, but I would agree with the AU grade (at a minimum) but to me the coin appears to have had a cleaning at some point in the past because of the dirt (or tarnish) in the protected areas (see the shield) while the high points are all clean.

My initial reaction was that it has been cleaned but probably a long time ago.

Nice capped dime. I agree with the consensus grade of AU.

I just wanted to add that even though I think it may have been cleaned, that very many of the coins this age have been. I'm not sure that the value or collectibility of this coin has been diminished by a decades old cleaning. Better pictures are needed to determine if (1) it is natural or cleaned, and (2) if cleaned, was the cleaning "harsh" or benign.

For the right price I'd buy a coin like that in a hearbeat for my collection. I love the nineteenth century!
