I would like to see what others think about the date doubling shown in the picture. Thanks.

I am guessing damage, since the devices are reduced in size

I believe that is Machine Doubling on the date. The doubled part is flat and shelf like. It's a neat coin though, and is a wheat. A genuine doubled die would have the doubled area raised. There may be something going on with the mintmark though. Sometimes they punch the mintmark on more than once, that is called a Re-punched Mintmark or RPM. Someone with more knowledge could let you know if it's an RPM.

MD. Didn't we just see the same coin sometime in the past week?
Rest in Peace

It does look like MD, but it's still a neat one. It only costs a cent to keep it.

Note how the devices are reduced on a MD 1957 cent:

Note that the coin was not doubled, but actually reduced part of the upper digits on the date.

That's a great image. It provides more than a thousand words when it comes to explaining "Machine Damage". My gut tells me, however, that John1 got it right this time; for I see this example as better explained by "ejection damage". Do you agree?

It looks as if all of the pressure was coming from the 11 o'clock direction and pushed the edges in to reduce the size of the devices.

It is Die movement during the strike as part of the bounce of the strike. Ejection doubling affects the tops of devices on just one side.

Thanks Coop, I appreciate the follow-up. Do you have any good images that show "ejection damage"? I'd like to see them if you do, to understand it better. Thanks.

You can see where the coin hit something on the way out of the chamber.
