Visited a local coin shop and....

I was told that I shouldn't talk about what I do & do not have on Internet forums nor anyone else for that matter bc you really don't know who to trust & not trust. That includes uploading & sharing pics.

That buying & selling cents is not worth my time & effort, unless I only concentrate on 1958 or older, unless they're varieties. But not all varieties. And not necessarily all wheaties, though at a minimum, I'd get approximately 4 cents per wheatie.

That I shouldn't be a crh'er bc anything that is really worth something is not going to be found in rolls.

I should read as much as possible in the Red Book before I start selling.

AND much more.

I'm sad bc I liked sharing stuff with you all.

Did the folks at the local coin shop ask you what you enjoyed collecting? Did they ask you how you enjoyed finding coins? If not, then you ought to think about if they really had "you" in mind, or if they were just telling you how they did things...

Well, that dealer is over-paranoid and/or wrong. I'm sure no one has had any threat to their security and assets because they participated in this forum. We have some members posting rather nonchalantly that they have $20,000+ coins, and they haven't had any negative effects.

As far as CRH is concerned, I say stick with it. You never know what you are going to find. Rare $100+ varieties are found on a regular basis, and scarcer date coins are sometimes found as well, along with silver coins. I could be wrong, but I think you are CRH for the fun of it and the exciting possibility that there is something to be found, not with the expectation that you will find some $10,000 coin.

The moral of the story is that you live and lead your own life, so don't let anyone tell you how you should live it.

Well then......let try to clarify his advice a little.

True to an extent. You need to keep anonymous on forums, even this one. Do not let slip your name, address, phone number, E-Mail etc.... If you do conduct any business via mail consider getting a P.O. Box and visit it on random days/times. These precautions will go a long way to protecting your self and your stuff from people who try social engineering.

That being said, the folks on this site are generally trustworthy and the mods/owner are quick to remove any such information from peoples posts.

WRT pictures, the only thing you really need to worry about is the metadata that some camera and phones put in. You can google how to remove it and I believe there is a discussion in the photography section of this forum about it as well.

Generally true if you are going for investment. If you are not interested in just investment then don't let his advice stop you from collecting what interest you. Many people get great enjoyment out of collecting moderns.

May be true in your neck of the woods. But again try it out and if you enjoy it do it. It's a good way to cherrypick modern errors and high grades for face value. You can build complete ultra modern sets by CRHing if you have patience. Just be sure you have a way to get rid of the coins that you do not intend to keep. (I like self check outs for the larger denominations).

100% true. Just do not limit yourself to the Red Book. There are books covering pretty much every topic in Numismatics. The public library can be a very good asset.

I hope you stick around here. This forum is the best single numismatic resource I have found on the web.

He said that if I liked crhing & if I had the time then I should do it.

And @John1 I am not sure. I would like to think that I'm going to still read the topics. And
I'd like to continue to post but I need to pray about what the dealer said.

Life has risks.

Since I do not collect gold, stack silver, or have extremely rare coins, the absolute value of my coin collection is covered by homeowners insurance. Further, were I ever to decide to buy, say, the entire proof ASE set, I have a safety deposit box.

A coin dealer takes different risks, as they are known to have coins, and to always be shipping. People might imagine them having a lot more than they actually do, so not having coin magazines around the house is prudent.

If you do intend to collect expensive coins, insure appropriately, and consider how it looks to an outsider.

Honestly, I feel like I am MORE protected to talk about and share my collection on the internet than in my own personal everyday life.

Besides a few people I have trusted to buy and sell stuff too here on the site nobody here knows my real name or my exact address. And nobody here knows exactly what I have in my collection or what I look like. I'm totally anonymous to share what I like. One of the sad things about my personal life is that I have to be really careful with whom I tell or show my collection too because once the wrong person knows that you have $5,000 worth of stuff that can fit into a backpack then it can be a big temptation. It happens unfortunately. Plus, most people I hang out with don't care about coins. It's good to come here to the site to find a wealth of people with common interests.

I recommend not going to that shop anymore and finding a more customer friendly one.

Much safer than going to a local coin club or coin show where crooks could follow you home.

As long as you aren't posting under your real name and you are careful about not giving any specifics about yourself and on where you live I think you are fine.

He may just not want you sharing the coins you bought from him. Maybe he sells dirty? Not saying that's the case, just playing devils advocate. I know more about coins in general, especially morgans, than all the lcs owners around me combined due to only 1 year of being on this forum! You would be doing a huge disservice to yourself to not stay and soak up all the knowledge by sharing and discussing.

On the other hand, it works the opposite way too. Don't tell people on forums identifying information but also DON'T tell anyone in person, even a dealer, you are on forums

Stuff like this cracks me up. You can't share on a " by and large " anonymous forum, about your modest coin collection, yet he can allow hundreds of people a day to see his thousands of dollars of coins first hand?

What is he saying ? He is smarter than all of us in protecting his coins from theft, but we are all stupid in protecting our collections. He has an alarm, I have an alarm; he has cameras and motion detectors, I have cameras and motion detectors. People sell things in their store's everyday with minimal worry, yet I can't meet someone from craigslist in public because it is "too dangerous"?

I would tell him, "I appreciate your concern, but I think that I am just as smart as you, thank you."

I wouldn't worry, it sounds like you are CRH for varieties that are likely going to be worth max of $50-100 and not talking about buying 1 of a kind coins and where you store them. For example the WAM you posted could be worth $50+, but if someone was robbing you today they'd think it was just a "penny" on the table..

I'm not sure about your LCS, but mine seem to be owned by retirees (opening store as retirement/hobby job) and I wouldn't include that age range to be internet friendly. They also deal with big $$ and not just for rare coins ie: someone walks in with a 1k+ ASE and they need to be able to move quick to have cash readily available.

In terms of anonymity.. Choose a screen name that gives no indication of who you are, i.e.; no one can google it and lead to your Facebook page or contact info and then you are at liberty to share your personal info if you are comfortable with making a trade or buying/selling with a member or get a PO Box.

In terms of CRH, I'm a fan of it.. But I get the feeling it's sometimes looked down upon by dealers or some collectors just think we're wasting our time. Everyone has their own opinion of it.
Rest in Peace

All I can add is that those who spend hours and hours coin roll hunting do it because they think it's fun. You could search your whole life and never find anything really valuable but still find some nice old coins and have a lot of fun doing it. Then again ... who knows? You might just find something of great value.

As for this forum: please stay and continue to participate. You don't have to write about what you own or post pictures to express an opinion here. This is primarily an educational site.

If you're unconfortable about sharing your real name and address, then don't do it.

Agree with the others that you can take reasonable steps to stay anonymous while still discussing your collection. I don't post under my real name although you can probably figure out my first name is Ken. But I don't post my last name even though I am not the only person by my full name even at my dentist, so it's not like I am that unique. I don't talk much about where or how I secure my collection or where actually I live, so I am not too worried. I would be far more worried about what you might post on Facebook or Twitter than what I post here.

As to what to collect? Collect what you like. If you like Lincoln Memorials, collect the very best you can. Will they be worth thousands some day? Probably not, but so what. If you like CRH, have fun. Too many of these coin dealers are so busy trying to figure out it something is an MS63 or an MS64 and wanting to charge 6x the price for one step grade difference. No thanks.

I think it's good to think about what they said, but it's just one opinion.
