So I was checking out mintproducts.com, a website that I have bought stuff from in the past, and they have a coin layaway program. Has anyone purchased coins like this before?
They have a whole Q n A section about it and it seems fairly simple. Ten percent down and then you make interest-free monthly payments on it for as long as you want. If you cancel then there is no penalty with a full refund. Seems like it could be an alright way to get high priced coins for those of us who aren't disciplined enough to just save, or who find it too painful to drop XXXhundreds all at once.

A few of the dealers at the local flea markets will hold a coin for me if I put a few bucks down for it. I tend to do this only for coins I think won't stick around long and don't have the cash to buy it outright.

Sounds like a good deal . I would only suspect the coins are on the expensive side.

Says they require a $50 minimum purchase. Think I might try it out of my first Trade dollar purchase. Automatic $25 a month off the credit card and I can get a high grade grade one in the mail around the time of next Christmas without ever having to think about it.

Don't know anything about the company in question but there are many dealers I know, and have dealt with for years that are perfectly happy to deal with me on layaway. (In fact so many of them I try to avoid doing so because it would be VERY easy for me to get way overextended.) that was how I purchased my 1793 S-13 liberty cap large cent, deposit and paid it off over six months.

I've seen alot of these around the websites I go to. If its interest free then fantastic but make sure you read the fine print. I bought a tv from best buy interest free for 6 months, but what I didn't know what that at 6 months and 1 day the accumulated interested all hit the remaining balance.
If you are disciplined enough to actual make the payments and pay on time or early then I see nothing wrong with it but like Conder said don't go overboard.

Many Australian Dealers offer a "Lay Away" service for their more expensive coins and I applaud them for doing so. This is a good thing as it helps to take away some of the financial "Pain" involved when buying that expensive coin you want/need for your collections The secret is to only do one coin at a time before starting another lay away agreement I have used this service on occasion and it is surprising how quickly you can pay it off if you set your mind to it.

Thank you, kind stranger, for the heads up on this website. I just ordered a gold samurai coin for my daughter and a 90% uncirc Kennedy as a test run.
If it works out well, I think I will test out the "take your time" option.

I don't buy anything, including coins, I can't pay cash for personally. I don't finance anything. My ecrater store I offer a layway plan though. Every ones financial situation is different.

True true. I figure it is not too often that I risk 60 bucks and several folks on this site have good things to say about it. LOL
You are definitely on my short list for when I move into the early part of my 7070. I trust you more than most, including the big internet stores.

Most of the dealers at the coin shows I go to have such policies. Some will hold a coin for customers with no down payment of any kind. One dealer told me I could have coins and pay for them when I can. I think coin people are basically sort of honest.
