This coin does not look right. I don't like the dark area around the mintmark.

If the coin is genuine, it has been acid treated and is worth at most $30. I would pay $20 as a hole filler.

I'm going with over polished from being ex jewelry over time smoothing the surfaces. Backing up my suspicion is the area above the t in trust which appears to be a groove from the mounting

Not sure about ex-jewelry, but the same basic coloring around the MM seems to appear in scattered places elsewhere on the obverse. I think it is probably an OK coin, and that the cleaning device just didn't get into the more protected areas.
Rest in Peace

I think it's genuine but harshly cleaned. Not for me.

I agree, that is does look like a real 1931 S

When I first looked at the coin, it made me think of the coins
I found metal detecting. I would put them into a rock tumbler.
Which is common for cleaning dirt crusted coins.

Many of the Lincoln's would have this look.

Genuine but harshly cleaned. Value greatly diminished.
