I thought you all would appreciate what I found in a pile of change. The fields are a bit cloudy, but it certainly seems like a proof!

Congratulations. It proves there are a few goodies left in circulation.

Nice find. It's called an impaired proof when found in circulation.

Almost all of the "impaired proofs" were impaired before they got in circulation. Most are released by wholesalers and others making rolls or collections. Bad coins are simply spent.

There's no reason a proof can't be found in circulation. It requires an average of about five transactions to damage a proof. These get removed very quickly from circulation in most cases. This specific example was likely released because of the heavy hazing and has had fewer than about ten transactions.

Thank for all the insights! I did think that it could have been damaged before it was released but that makes sense . How do proofs get that hazy appearance? They all start in proof sets from the mint, is that right?

I found two impaired proofs dimes this past year in change.

Also found five LMC proofs on the side of the road while walking my dog Halo.

Someone removed the higher denomination coins from the mint sets and discarded the cents and mint set packaging at a highly traveled intersection.

Four were still in the mint set package and one had fallen out and was run over a few times.

Speculated they had been stolen mint sets as I don't think a collector would have tossed them out in this manner. Thanks, Doug.

Between about 3 and 20% of proofs dependent on date and denominaytion are culls. Two thirds of these were culls before they left the mint and the rest are things that happened to them along the way. Most of these latter are from fire or flood but there are numerous ways they can tarnished or go bad. Your example is somewhat atypical but I'd guess the set got wet or exposed to a lot of moisture.
