I search the melt bag of half dollars most every time I go to the local B & M and over the last year have gotten a couple nice errors/varieties. This particular variety is listed in Cherry Pickers as a Hand Engraved Initials. The initials of the coins designer Adolf Weinman were usually on the master hub and die series but for some reason were not transferred to the working dies so they later engraved them by hand onto the dies.

When I got this coin I graded it a nice F-12, and since Cherry Pickers lists it as a 50$ coin in Fine. I put it on the pile to go to ANACS for my first slabbing experience at the MSNS show in Detroit in December. I was surprised at the grade given, I guess I am a bit conservative. I will be posting some of the other coins I sent in over the next couple weeks.

The Initials on the left side are the Hand Carved initials on my coin, the right side is normal engraving.

Thanks Vaslin, I also scored an MS 1945 No Initials out of the regular box of Walkers, and have a circ No Initials from the melt bag. The MS Walker with No Initials is headed for ANACS next time around if I ever get anything slabbed again ! I have Numerous DDO Kennedy's from the melt bag too, the nicest one might just get slabbed even though they are fairly common.

I've had one in MS66 available for $350 for a long time with no takers. I like them, but can't seem to be able to get rid of a nice one when I have it.

Yea Coppercoins, I know what you mean- no interest means no sale. I really am not that interested in value for the varieties and errors I find since I haven't found anything I would call major- I think my 1887 VAM 1A might be my personal best so far. I have a bunch of DDO Kennedy's and I keep every one I find, but I doubt they will ever be worth much of a premium. It's these little anomalies that keep me searching ....and searching...and searching.

I like finding anything that might be worth more than I pay for it (Don't we all !) but I have a VERY hard time relinquishing anything from my collection at any price so they are essentially "worthless" at this point.
