Its somewhat of a low nickel German Silver type with tin instead of zinc.

GS = Cu/Zn/Ni

Analysis = Cu (66.4%), Zn (4.87%), Sn (27.7%), Nickel (1.1%) plus trace (<5%) outside contaminants (sulfur, oxygen & chlorine).

Seems it a situation when in making this GS alloy tin was used or more available due to a lack of zinc availability. Coin has a silvery slick surface. Plain Edge. 26.2 mm, 4.3 grams. Grades: Fine.

Need to check - can't recall a GS type alloy where tin was substituted for zinc?

Will post a picture ... soon with its new Kleeberg designation.

At 10PM EST tonight I decided to give it to a new collector - hopefully. It's the silver alloy with copper hue overtones (IN HAND). Looks like Bronze in the pics. ITS NOT!

10PM EST tonight with these other ebay items.

UNIQUE (Rarity 9) and its alloy type. NO RESERVE.

A great study piece and a very KOOL alloy.

You can't take it with you ... so they say. Enjoy.

John, saw that coin when it was previously listed. My impression of the piece was that it was just kind of a sloppy casting. If you get past the muddled transitions between relief and fields, the design elements look quite correct for an 1804 (and surrounding) Lima 2R... even down to the inward-sloping date digits.

Also, I would offer that "assayer J" is actually just the correct-for-the-date assayer JP with the "P" just lost in a non-impressed and/or worn area. Fairly sure I see a weak impression of what should be the dot after J (though not really any trace of the "P" after that).

The 1822 Durango 8R is an interesting piece. The obverse is fairly accurate... but then the reverse went all wrong!

The world is not ready for that 1822 <LOL> ... but I occasionally like to release a Kleeberg to spark a new collector ... maybe ... it will probably go to a seasoned collection. Strange 1822 ... no coin ring ... I mean a BLUNT SOUND when tapped. Cast Silver ... there is a few really ODD pieces in the GNL CCC8R Family ... this GNL variety is unquestionably one of them. Gordon Singer says he has never seen another cast silver like this outside of the 1811-1813 Chihuahua types ... and he is a serious long time chaser of WOI pieces for dealer stock but nothing like Dunnigan or Keech.

Several people have E-Mailed me about this specimen and Kleeberg's. The main features on this counterfeit 2 Reales Contemporary Circulating Counterfeit or the requirements to be classed in this Counterfeit Family:

1. Must be off-metal: copper, brass, bronze, German silver.

2. Debased silver issues which are MORE COMMON and worth less are not classified as Kleebergs.

3. Almost always Plain Edge and Medal Turn Die Axis.

4. Spanish-American Mint types which circulated in the 18thC and 19thC.

5. Currently ~ 150 varieties. Most Rarity 8-9.

6. See Stacks/Bowers November 2012 (David Wnuck Collection) for a good reference.
