Found at a coin show yesterday; I now have two of these. This was in plain view in a $4 2x2. I can only guess the dealer doesn't look for die varieties.

That one is so obvious that even I might have noticed it! Then again, I probably would have assumed it was Machine Doubling because I still have a hard time telling the two apart.

Yes, perhaps the dealer thought it was MD too. In this case, a very good marker are the doubled serifs on the "E", which are very clearly separated. The same goes for the "C", but it's harder to see in this photo.

Some dealers don't look for variety. I went into a coin shop the other day and tried talking to the owner about a VAM I have. He acted as if he didn't know what I was talking about. I asked him if he had ever been to the VAMworld website and he said he'd never heard of it. This wasn't a small coin shop either. I thought VAM was common terminology in the Coin World. I was able to pick up a couple of 1889's with die chips for pretty cheap.

Thanks! It was a lot of fun to spot this, because as I went through a binder page of '87, I thought of this DDO--and there it was!

Richard, You know...I'm actually rather certain ; the markers are plainly visible on that big pic. Those are good resources, but I do know the difference between "Longacre doubling" and MD, etc. Thanks for all your comments! My other example is exactly the same--and verified by Rick Snow himself. Anybody is free to compare these coins to the markers in the attribution guides--I'm not going to go through a long-winded analysis here, lol. In case you're curious, here's my XF-45 copy of the S-1 DDO:
