I'd go with a coin that has quite a low mintage.

I would go with a proof Libertad. Like the one in my avatar. The mintage on that one was 1100.

I haven't even started researching gold yet (funds are far away from ever getting one now) but I would start by getting the hardest gold coin in either my Mexico or US type albums on the gold pages.

You could get a 'common date' $3 gold in the AU 50 range and have one of the tough gold types done right off the bat. Wait until you find a nice one with minimal bag marks. Most will suggest a double eagle first. But there are lots of folks who have a double eagle but not a $3 gold.

I personally rather thought of some of the "more common" Charlotte or Dahlonega dates in lower grades, but the $3 gold is a nice idea too (though I probably couldn't afford to wait for "a nice one").

Other than that, most likely, as old as I can go. So either an ancient, or a ducat of some kind. (A large electrum piece would be nice, but probably over the money.) But if I can find some fractional 19th (or 18th) century gold denominations for anywhere near metal value (such as the ones described in this post)... as many different countries for these as I could get for that money.

Of course, realistically, I'll buy one or two common small 19th century coins (might or might not be American, depending on what I encounter first), and spend the rest on silver (with $100 left over for bargain bins).

The only gold coin I have ever really wanted is the 2014 Gold Kennedy half dollar.

This ended up being my first big gold coin purchase, and probably my last for some time. I hope you get to enjoy this one someday, jbuck; it is a spectacular coin.

If-You-Had-$1200-To-Get-Your-First-Gold-Coin,-Which-One?

These are my most expensive coin purchases to date (images are not my actual coins). Direct from US Mint on the first, PCGS MS-63 on the second (from ebay).

Love the reverse of the (no motto) St Gaudens $20 - would love to buy one of those one day. I really liked the 2015 Liberty high relief $100 gold - out of my budget.

St. Gaudens $20 all the way. One time at our LCC meeting we auctioned one off... a 1927 MS-64 CAC $20, starting bid $1,400... No one even bid!
