The vast majority of Canadian red cents aren't worth the price of an ICCS slab, very few are worth a PCGS slab. Most of the red cents will remain raw, individual collectors must decide what's red for themselves.

PCGS is the best for sure.
Many 'red-browns' are graded 'RED' by ICCS and this is one of the major flaws of ICCS.

If the coin is worth it (or if I'm going to hold onto it forever), PCGS will be the way I go. If I'm selling a common red cent, ICCS will be my choice. If the coin I'm selling is blazing red is considered a high-end item for high-end collectors, then PCGS will be my choice.

To the original poster, why not edit your post and set up a poll with the various TPG companies as options?

PCGS NGC ICCS
In order. The more I learn, the less I trust ICCS for certain grades and colors. ICCS red is a color I don't trust without careful inspection. It is kind of like an MS coin that has been net graded by ICCS to low MS/AU.

PCGS uses a higher threshold for Red than ICCS.

One point I must bring up in defense of ICCS is this....
ICCS's ms65 quite often is better than PCGS's ms65 in regards to the coin's marks.
So to conclude:
PCGS's 'RED" designation is more strict than ICCS's 'RED' designation, but to offset this (or complicate the matter further), ICCS's ms65 may be stricter than PCGS's grade of ms65.
Confusing?....Perhaps this is the reason I don't collect Copper.

In pennies the colour is almost as important as the grade, I am partial to a PCGS slab.

Quote: ICCS's ms65 quite often is better than PCGS's ms65 in regards to the coin's marks. That really depends where the marks are. The two companies grade coins differently. ICCS likes clean fields and is more forgiving of marks on the devices. PCGS likes clean devices, and is more forgiving of marks on the fields. Canadian collectors tend to like how ICCS grades, since marks on the fields tend to stand out more. But those who collect upper end mint state coins (top 10 stuff), really prefer clean devices, as that is where the engraver put their artistry to work. Personally, my Canadian and NFLD 1-cent collection are in PCGS holders. I really do prefer how they use the upper part of the Sheldon scale and strictness on 'Red'. However, most of my inventory and extra coins I sell online and at coin shows, are in ICCS holders, because that is what the Canadian collector wants.
