That's a nice looking dollar coin, but I'm going to have to think (hard) about buying the set or not. I just got the Canadian uncirculated set last week, and although the coins are nice, the lack of item quantity bothers me somewhat.

I recently began buying former PL, Proof, and Specimen coins and am having second thoughts. Anyone care to 'pump-up' my falling attitude?

Truly a beautiful coin in this set, but I have stopped (for the most part) buying special issue coins from the RCM. There are just too many "special" coins for me to ever think anyone could be interested enough in them to even give me back what I have to spend to get them if I should ever have to sell.

It also means that when I really like a design, if I just wait a bit then I can have it on ebay for less output.

Sorry not pumping up the failing attitude - but the RCM has made "special" so common its no longer special enough for me to be concerned about. I may be wrong, but I think in years to come many of these coins will be able to be had for a lot less.

The Tundra Swan loonie is a beautiful coin that has a rightful place in any loonie collection. (The only reason I have built a loonie collection is to tweek interest in my coin collection by my children or grandchildren, something they can identify with, not saying it will be so...)

However it irritates me when these "unique coins' are packaged within a set. For people who do not collect Specimen sets, the markup for one loonie is very high. "only found in this set" suggests this indeed is a marketing tactic.

Atticguy, former Proof sets were the highest quality of the collector sets that you mention. Since the '90s the lined specimen sets, not my cup of tea. PL resembles that of circulated coin. If you plan to pursue a collection involving sets, I'd recommend to consider focusing on just one type. Each is different but still also very much the same. Some people collect single decimals of each finish though. ebay is where the balance of broken up sets such as this, minus the loonie, likely end up.
Rest in Peace

Atticguy, that's what I've also started doing. It's a great way to get back into the hobby with prices very low on 20 or 30 year old PL and specimen sets. At that price you don't have any regrets to taking them apart to 'fill' holes in the collection, and they are usually in very nice condition.

At $49.95 for the current specimen set, $9.95 win on ebay for similar from the 1970's feels like a steal.
