I've seen rock tumblers result in that type of surface as well.
Rest in Peace

John1, I will defer to your expertise but I would have guessed the coin had heat/fire damage. Is there a way to spot the difference?

If it was heat I would think it would be a different color like black maybe but I don't really know.

HCL, HNO3, or H2SO4 are possible cabdidates. They all react with silver. My first thought was HNO3 because that can be used to make silver nitrate, or AgNO3.

The actual chemists on this forum may correct me...

The thing I'm (not) seeing is no weight loss that's usually associated with acid. Blow torch may be viable. Thanks, Doug.

Yes, I was thinking that if it was acid there should be a reduction in weight and if it was a rock tumbler or heat there would be little to no weight reduction.

Also the reeds on the edge would be present and strong. They are weakened from the acid bath.
