A possible reason popped into my mind. Someone without understanding (nor sense) was trying to mount these items into jewelry by crimping staple-like pieces of metal to hold the coins in place.

These coins appear to be legitimate... I concur that they could've been mounted in jewelry.

Could they be fakes and someone marked them so they won't be worth anything to anybody? Just a thought. John1

I was thinking that as well, John1, but the VDB on the 1909 S looks to be correct, although I'm not 100% sure about the mint mark it looks pretty good to me. As for the 1914 D, I wish I could get a better, closer, look at the date/MM. Seller looks good, so id assume they are real.

Another opinion... some bored kid with dikes (diagonal cutters) damaging cents he had no clue about. The dikes may have had a notch in them already.

They look like good candidates to put through the next elongated coin machine I come across.

dikes leave a wedge or "V" shaped mark....these marks have parallel edges like a staple that tried to penetrate and then folded over...
or possibly R2D2 bite them in a fit?

Good point, Hrny.
Regardless I think it was a bored kid doing bored things in dad's shop one summer that dragged on too long. Yes, many years ago that kid could have been me.
