I can get pics tomorrow (sorry I know this makes all the difference) but from what I remember it didn't seem too bad quality wise of a coin. My LCS had it priced at $300 which is only $18 over spot for a 1915. I am looking to trade up a 1/10 oz gold Panda and was wondering if this would be an OK deal or not? Again I will add pics tomorrow! Thanks for any insight!

In my opinion.

Some jewelry pieces are better than others.

Some get beat up pretty bad and over polished.

But then I have taken some out of bezels that show
very little or no sign of being mounted.

When your getting just over spot, it is something worth
considering.

It might interest you to know what they would buy it
back for, if you ever needed to sell it. I know some
LCS that pay 85 to 90% of spot for problem gold.

Yeah I tried looking at the coin's rim (was in a 2x2) when I was last there and didn't seem bad. I think they also said it was polished and that is why it was a low price. Probably just because I don't know gold well enough but seemed to look ok to me anyways. Going to grab pics at lunch here in about 2 hours.
Rest in Peace

It depends on what you will think of the coin in years to come. Will you look at it as a proud addition to your collection? Or will you only see a problem coin you are not happy to own?

Mox, with it being almost a quarter oz of gold, I don't think I will be unhappy with it ;) unless of course gold gets super cheap like it used to be again (but even that wouldn't help too much due to numismatic value of these coins). We will see!

OK so price was actually $335 but still looks pretty good as far as I can tell.

And on further inspection (and inquiring) the coin was never in a bezel so the rims are ok the only thing was that there are some marks and it has been polished as it is reflective a little bit. Will be stopping back there today possibly since the lcs said they could ship it out for $350 today if I don't take it at $320 (his lowest price). What think all ye? I am not too disappointed with the polishing as I can't tell without looking closely at it (except for the slight reflectivness of it). But then again, this may be my only gold coin possibly ever and it is relatively close to spot only about $30 higher. I am definitely leaning towards not being too picky on the gold coins since worst case scenario I sell it at spot again. Thanks for your opinions!

Well thought about it and went ahead and purchased my first gold coin (technically the 1/10 oz gold panda I received as a gift was the first)! Was able to trade in my 1/10 oz gold panda for $120 and so the price out of pocket I paid for this 1915 $5 gold Indian (polished) was $200. Also got the worn Peace dollar for $10! I am happy with the details in the coin (main thing I am looking for) and the polishing doesn't seem too distracting to me. Thanks for all the opinions and we will see how long it is before another gold coin is ever purchased!

I really like it, you did pretty good imo. I think I would've done the same thing. I like the Indian Head gold and so do lots of people, you could easily move it.

And plus I looked on ebay and the lowest BIN for any ex jewelry, cleaned $5 gold was $400. There were only a handful that were in the same price range in the sold listings and you are right some of them were worse off looking than mine. My goal probably is getting the gold coins as close to spot as possible and as long as the details/damage doesn't distract too much from the details of the coin.
Rest in Peace

You might see some 'ex-jewelry' marks when you get it out of the 2X2.

But the coin doesn't show a lot of abuse at all. So...

You can definitely see its been polished and cleaned (and also the fact I really need to study up on getting better pics with my phone) but the rims are nice no real "damage" to the coin that I can see. And either way looks really good in my 7070! The only problem now... It looks lonely and needs a friend!
