Good question! I've often wondered how this works too! Was there ever a single letter cert?

Nope , random two letter sequences until the 3 letters starting with X** came about.

The holders with the crimped seal (like the one in the photo) are older than ones without. I don't know when they stopped crimping the paper, but I am going to guess 10+ years ago.

Random eh... Wonder why and how they are able to keep track of what they have already done.

Pretty simple stuff really. Let's do AA001 to AA999 done QW001 to QW999 next .SR001 to SR999 done and the hamster just stays on the treadmill.
They must keep some records as there is a yearly POP report. Since there is an invoice for every transaction pretty easy to tie it all together.

Call them and ask them politely to look up the letters 'AH' and they will tell you what year it was graded.

They may not be able to do this on the spot, but give them some time and they will have the answer for you.

Three letter certs started in November of 2011.

The certs did not start alphbetically, but are in a random order.

The very first cert I know has the letters 'AJ' and these are actually a slightly larger size than all the others.

Their records are definitely not complete.

I have some specimen coins in their 2 letter embossed holders that have never made it in to any of the POP releases...
