Couple of dollars at most in this condition in my opinion. Severe environmental damage.

I have a couple of poor quality flying eagles, and a couple of better examples. If I had found this one in the 50 cent dealer's junk box, I most probably would have left it there.

Someone would have taken it sooner or later.

Well... I'm disappointed. Bought it for $5 and now I found a better example of it. Guess I'll hold onto it then.

Agree, just a cull, but a good pocket piece, perhaps.

Remember that Flying Eagles are not exactly rare, 17+ million were minted in 1857 and although they are very popular with collectors they are widely available in lower grades. A coin in G-04, without any problems, is worth about $15-20.

When I first bought it I thought it was a metal detecting find

I'd say most likely a detecting find and agree with the low values stated but if that were on the bay claiming to have been dug at Gettysburg or some other famous battle it would probably bring 50 or more.

Use it as a pocket piece .....

It will make it only look better with some wear and what a cheap nice little pocket piece it would make ....

Great conversation started and easy to carry around and heck if you forget and run it though the washer, it will be cleaned too along with the environmental damage and still hanging in there, it's the bomb!
