I have been looking for a nice Barber dime to replace the one I sold recently to a good customer. I saw this one, a 1916 MS66 PCGS-CAC, in an auction and liked the look of it. It didn't take a whole lot of rooting around to discover it was also the former Gene Gardner Collection coin and one that had bounced around quite a bit over several years at lower and lower prices as the coin market slid -- despite the fact that it also got a CAC sticker along the way.

At any rate I put in a reasonable bid, not high, and I think I just won it by a whisker. I like Gene Gardner's coins not only because they are beautifully toned but because, more importantly, he had a great eye for coins that he developed over many years of buying the finest-looking numismatic material he could obtain. Although Seated coins were his forte, he also had nice runs of Barber dimes and quarters (oh yeah!), large cents, Liberty nickels, and tons of other great coins. I am still suffering withdrawal now that those sales are finished.

This is only my second Gene Gardner coin. The first is an 1820 Large Date cent, one of the Randall Hoard coins. Also extremely nice. MS64 "Brown" NGC.

Enjoy! Do your Homework!

Best Regards,

George
