Im new to the forum and new to Coin collecting (Morgan's). I am over 50 and my eyesight is shot. I am looking to buy some type of (higher quality) base lighted magnifying lamp. Any recommendations on where to look or places some of you may have purchased. Thanks

Unless you plan on using it at shops/shows get yourself a non lit jewelers loupe and a good light source like a swing arm lamp, that's what I use. A 10x and a 14x Hastings triplet is the best but a doublet will do. If you have to have a lit mag get one with a light "ring" and not just a bunch of LEDS.

Thank you for your input. I do need something that is lighted. I have poor lighting in my little home office. I like LED lights but I agree I dont want something with 40 little LED lights on it. I dont plan on toting something around to coin shows, but I dont have any problems with wanting a high quality lamp/magnifier for my personal use at my desk. After 30 years of Navy abuse of glare off of the water my eyesight needs help.

If you have a light on the magnification source it will bleach out areas of the coin. You need a 10x jewelers loupe with a seperate light source to move the coin and loupe in relation to the light source

Since you don't plan on carrying it around, you may want to consider a USB microscope. Just plug it into your computer and the image appears on the screen. An added bonus is that you can take a pic with them.

If you decide to try one, get one that allows you to turn the light off. Mine has a light that is always on and it is annoying.

If you look on Amazon there is a nearly endless variety with every possible option. Read the reviews, too.

Below is what I use and it cost about $12 at Walgreens. I like this magnifier with a LED light a lot as I need it anytime I look at a coin. It also has a 5K spot that acts like a loupe.

I also have a none lighted 10K loupe.

@John1 -- thanks.

I've tried wax paper, regular paper and cardboard. I've had some limited success. Seems I'm always making adjustments. Still, it's pretty handy to get a nice close-up photo.

Bought these from ebay:

Lighted-Magnifiers

Lighted-Magnifiers
From left to right. $5, $2, and small one $12.
The first two I don't use them anymore(junk).

Lighted-Magnifiers

Lighted-Magnifiers
The one with lights was $8.
Both are 10x and works very well. I carry the small one with me when I go to coin shops.
