I just bought 37 lbs of Wheat Cents. I was surprised when they arrived in a very heavy canvass bag. Has anyone seen a bag like this before? If so, in what context?

I asked the seller, who is not a coin collector/dealer, if he could remember where the bag came from. He did. He said he got it from an "old time vending machine operator who had retired." I am thinking this may mean the coins were pulled from circulation sometime when vending machines still took "Pennies" (when was that?). I certainly remember the Penny Gumball Machines when I was a kid, but I cannot remember how long they were around.

So I have hopes that this is truly an unsearched resource! I wonder how many years it will take me to go through it? I am still working on about 6 lbs of Wheat Cents I acquired over a month ago.

Also there is a teller at a local bank which has a counting machine, who notifies me anytime they have someone come in with a large jar of Cents they have been saving for a while. I then go in and buy the sack...so I still have about 15 lbs of those to search!

Here is the sack of Wheat Cents:

That sure looks like fun. I went through a 50+lb bucket last year. I don't know anything about the bag though.

Does look like a fun bag to search. I've bought a few bags but never saw one like that.

An "old time vending machine operator" could have used the bag for anything - but probably for coins. It is a leap to assume that the cents came from that person, unless the seller made that claim. I guess anything is possible.

Good luck with your search, and show us the highlights.

Yes it is a leap to make that assumption. However, the seller said nothing about that in the sales presentation. I only learned it when I asked if he remembered where he got it. So I can see no reason why he would make up the story. The transaction was already complete.

I believe 1/2 of what I hear anyway, but think the search should be fun!
Rest in Peace

I'm not an expert on antiques but I think that canvas bag looks handmade is probably worth more than all the cents you got.

I have often been quite surprised at the value of old handmade cloth items. I tried to look it up but so far I haven't found anything like it. But I doubt that I would because it is probably one of a kind.

Do not store the bag in plastic because that will ruin it.

Anyway, I think you have a unique item that is worthy of some evaluation.

Good luck searching through those cents. I hope you have hours of fun!

Thanks, Buddy. I have an interest in antiques, but I have no ideas at all about how to explore this. Perhaps I'll look for a FB group to start.
