The 1921 Morgan came up on another forum, and I wanted to pass along the information. The link is for a 1921 MS63PL Morgan. Note the serial number has 7 digits and this age holder should have 8 digits. If a OGH is re-holdered, a 0 is added as a first digit. The coin also does not match the one sold on Heritage. The seller ahello2u23 ended this item today. 262317246355This 1887 MS63 DMPL PCGS is still active for sale note the coin has a three prong holder and a PCGS coin with the series and coin number has a full ring holder. 262310690822Below is a photo of the genuine 1887 MS63 DMPL coin that sold at Heritage.

This is why I buy the coin and not the slab. If I agree with the number stated on the slab, then the authenticity of the slab is moot. If I think it is overgraded, then I pass it by.

Is the coin in the fake holder also a fake? It is a little hard to tell from the picture.

The coins in the holders appear to be genuine. On the 21, one could find a semi proof like graded ms 61 for about $50 and pass it off as MS63 PL for about $350. On the 87 the margin would be less because the DMPL would sell for about $200.

Seems like a tremendous amount of work for little gain, even selling a lot of them. If the person is good enough to do all that with fake slabs you would think they would be good enough to find a great job.

I don't think they are the same coin. If the experts agree I would take note of the imperfections in the sealed ring. I believe this is done with an ultrasonic "horn" and it's usually s telltale sign

Here is the latest PCGS fake holder that the seller has sold. There is an extra number in the cert number as there are 9 digits. 262365089178

This underscores the importance of buying from reputable well established dealers. Ultimately, a high quality dealer who employs expert numismatists is your best defense against these types of shenanigans. Very unlikely, for example, you'll get a problem coin buying from Heritage direct.

This is discouraging. I checked out the seller's auctions and people ARE actually buying these coins. Based on the quality of the photographs alone, I would never consider even bidding.

Yeah, I'm the "dumb" one that bought the MS-65PL AND the 1880 MS 64 Morgans from this ripoff artists. The holder on the MS-65PL actually looks MOSTLY genuine. The holder for the 1880 is OBVIOUSLY fake.(And that is when I looked into the other holder more carefully and realized it was ALSO fake) I honestly didn't pay much attention to it in the listing as there was NUMEROUS up close pictures of the coin and only one of the holder. Anyway, I filed a case to get my money back. I then contacted ebay about the counterfeit holders and they still want me to return the coins so this guy so he can DO THIS AGAIN. SMH. I definitely learned a lesson with this. I do think the coins are genuine although I am not so sure about the awesome toning on each of them.

Vent,
Sorry to hear you were ripped off by this seller. I did see that the seller was left some negitive feedback on selling counterfeit holders. I am sure that the toning is AT and part of the scam. Keep us up to date on your returns.
