Hello friends,

I picked up this little guy last week. 10mm, 1.4gms

For me the only real possibilities would be Theo II, Valentinian III, or Johannes and am wondering what others think. I can't say anything definite about the obverse legend so I am going mainly on style. The reverse field mark may help but I can't say for sure what it is.

You know the old saying, "When in doubt, just say Johannes"

Thanks in advance for any help (best I could do with my phone for pics)

My best guess would be Valentinian III.

It could also be Johannes. He minted this type with letters in the reverse field.

Could the field letter be an epsilon?

Compare it to this:

Thank you Ron and Paul for your comments. I was thinking Chi Rho over P but it is so hard to compare to known examples as the coins of this period and of this type are so crude.

I bought is thinking the style was closer to Johannes but that may just be wishful thinking.

I believe I see a V in upper right of obverse, so I'm inclined to say Theo II. Plus the bust is thinner than those you usually see on Johannes, since his beard makes his busts look kinda chunkier. But no worries. Johannes or not yours is still an attractive example of a 5th century AE4.
