This may be old news, but it seems that about 90% of ebay listings are buy it now. Why have true auctions almost disappeared?

As an ebay Power seller I can give you a touch of our personal experience. You simply get more money when you BIN with your price and are patient. You can really get picked off if you do auctions. That game is over.

also. Not sure if there is something driving the trend or not. Maybe folks these days are doing better financially, and have the time do do BINs. In more desperate times there might be more auctions

Hey, Ill also add that ebay stores have changed in regards to the "free allotted listings" given to the sellers each month. For example, my Anchor store gets 2500 free listings... It used to be fixed price or auction. Now its only fixed price, with only 100 "free" auctions per month.

It is very easy to lose money when listing items in the auction only format and starting them at 99 cents.

Its very easy to reduce your profit margin. However, if you buy at the right price, a .99 auction can be profit with one bid:)

I tried the auction route for more-common stuff. Never again.
Now stuff that is more popular, I would consider putting up for auction, just to see where it will go.

The ebay of old reminds me of when mtv first came out, they played music videos. Not anymore, for reasons mentioned prior.

In US coins only, not counting world coins, ancient coins, tokens, or paper money - ONLY - US coins, there are 839,769 lots on ebay, of which 127,389 are auctions. It simply takes longer if you are waiting for a good deal on ANY coin. I use my entire 100 allotted searches and for particular coins in particular grades it may take as long as a couple of years for what I want to show up in an auction. However, since I have an extensive want list there are always more auctions available for what I want than I could ever afford. Yes, you almost always get a better price on an auction than a BIN or BO. Patience is the secret ingredient to finding the coins you want at prices you like.
