that hasn't been graded. What are the steps one should go through prior to selling?
Yes, it is raw.
I don't know how to post pics so that's out of the ? right now.

Selling where? Few collectors will buy this date in most any grade without a TPG holder. Posting pics is not difficult, it just takes a little practice. Take good photos of your coin, upload them to your computer, and then follow instructions in the tutorial.

The date and mintmark would have to be clearly visible.

The 1916-D Mercury dime is one of the MOST counterfeited coins of all time, with added mint mark being the most likely type for many of those counterfeits. Although it's relatively easy to determine the authenticity of the majority of the specimens found, it really requires an expert (we have several on this forum) for better determination of authenticity. Many collectors would never buy this date, even in low grade, unless it is certified. If you have a coin shop anywhere near you they could probably offer an opinion, too.

For what it cost to have it authenticated, it's really worth it. Most would not touch that one unless in a slab.

thank you. I will take it to a coin store on Monday. It came out of my father in laws collection.

Wearing down a 1916-D fake would help to cover a lot of the fakery. Seen this with ancient coins.

I am sure we all want to hear about the results. Maybe you can figure out how to post pictures while we wait

I might try and trade the AG 1916-D for the 1921-D and the 1921 in fine or very fine condition. If you can't see the whole date on a coin as in most AG coins it hurts the numismatic value which is about the only value this coin has since it is not much silver. You get the 16-D, 21 and 21-D you have the key dates for Mercury dimes. Most of the rest is not that rare or valuable. I don't even know exactly why the 1921 is valuable since they minted 11 million of them.
