I was perusing the mints website and noticed that the 2014 Kennedy 50th Anniversary Silver 4 Coin Set is now listed as unavailable. A week ago it was available. Perhaps this is finally it for the availability from the mint. http://catalog.usmint.gov/50th-anni...lars#start=1

Wow. Who knew it would take this long. I remember worrying when it went on sale, hoping I did not miss my chance due to a quick sellout.

The four coin silver set is that the limit is 225,000 and it sold for $99.95 from the mint. The limit of the two coin clad uncirculated is 200,000 and it sold for $9.95 from the mint. It's selling in the $20 range on ebay now while the 4 coin silver set is selling in the $90 to $100 range. So, basically the two coin clad set has doubled in price while the 4 coin silver set is struggling to stay at the mint's issue price. From a numismatic standpoint, the clads are rarer, so I'm betting the prices on a coin by coin basis get closer together as time goes on.

It would certainly be nice if things were so simple. As the RCM can contest, us collectors have bottomless pockets having little if anything to do with logic.

IIRC at the time of the release of the Kennedy 4-coin set, the Mint had just launched its new web site and this was its first big test. Previously there had been many a debacle when a highly-anticipated coin/set was released and the traffic brought down the ordering site. I seem to recall that this product launch on the new platform wasn't perfect but it was much better than the timeouts and "waiting room" experience of the past (think the 25th Anniversary ASE set and first of the 2010 ATB P pucks). The hype in the days leading up to the launch was pretty big, as I recall, but obviously everyone who wanted one got one, in this case.

I am glad I also got the clad set. I have mentioned this before, but it fits nicely inside the four coin set box to make for convenient storage. Quote: Jbuck, what was the experience and hype like in the surrounding days or release? Have a look... https://goccf.com/t/189402

I'm not in favor of the creation of special alloy, mint mark derivatives, or surface treatments that seem so popular. I did buy a set and a gold Kennedy just to keep my "1964-date set" complete but it left me annoyed and firmly opposed to future fantasy creations. I was glad to get rid of the "impostor" profile of JFK but wonder why the series is even still in production ...oh yes, the profit for the government ... just follow the money trail.
