Hello everyone, I came across this 20? Roosevelt dime and was wondering if anyone can tell me if it was a mint error that did this to the coin. The outer edge of both sides of the coin are smooth as you can hopefully see from the attached pictures.

PSD. Was thinking ground down, sanded or altered after it was struck. Thanks, Doug.

When the rims are removed off the obverse or reverse or both, the coin has been altered. They were there until someone removed them. Collectable? It is just damage. Buy a new car and hit the fender with a large hammer. Does it make your coin more valuable? It is just a damaged car now. Same for a coin. All collectable value is gone. When the coin gets back to the bank it will probably be sent back to the mint for removal from use.

Bwaters, good question. Coop, you stated, Quote: When the coin gets back to the bank it will probably be sent back to the mint for removal from use. I have wondered about this especially the Zincoln coins. Having searched a large number of cent bricks and found a number of these zinc rot cents. How do the banks deal with them?

to CCF. Looks PSD to me also. I don't think banks mess with them. John1

Not sure exactly, but I bet they send them back to the armored car carriers and back to the baging depots, then to the mints.

First my socks and now my coins, darn you dryer! looking at the pics in the link and the ones that we posted, they look quite different to me. The Dryer Coins seem to flair and almost curl at the rim vs the smoothness of ours.
