Hi
Can't tell by the date myself but the mm for the small date matches better to mine than the mm for the large date.

Can you tell me which one I have?

Thanks

Looks to me to be a Large date. On the small date the zero has a more narrow opening. Large zero wide circular opening. I also think the space between the edge of the 6 to the edge of the zero are closer on the large date. I could be wrong.

Also notice the direction of the curl of the 9.

I see what you mean Pete, On the large date all of the ends of the 9 and 6 are blunt type as well. Not sure if that was just by chance.

I see what you both are saying and if it weren't for the MM matching better to the small date I wouldn't even have questioned it. So maybe they used both MM's on both large and small?

I am not certain that the shape/position of the mintmark has any impact on whether large or small.

Why did they make two types that year?

If the MM plays no roll in determining this then yes I agree on the Large Date since that was my first thought on it. No biggy really it is common with the Denver mm's but the challenge for me is always figuring out which one it is.

Thanks for all your help.

NSS-52 I thin it was a mistake because from what I know only the proofs were supposed to have the small dates. I am sure other experts will know the complete correct answer to that question.

I always visually draw a line across the tops of the 1 and the 9. It's the Large Date if the top of the 9 is higher than the line.

On the small date there is a tooling/engraving mark on the center loop of the 6:

This tooling mark makes that area thick than the large date.

Note that on these sides by sides. So by comparing yours with the examples above, it is a large date because that loop area is thin.

The tail of the 6 on the large date curls almost entirely over the lower part of the numeral. On a small date it stops a little over midway. That's the easiest way for me to tell which one I have.

I spent a lot of time looking at the 1960s to determine which is which. What helped me determine is the large date zero looks like a good circle, while the small date looks egg-shaped or more elliptical.
