I saw an auction for what the seller claimed was a 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. It looks like a Poor-1 coin and I certainly can't see any date on it so it could be a 1795. I don't know the series well enough to know.

The coin sold for $295. Do folks think the winning bidder (not me) got a good deal or not?

Thanks for your opinions.

It's a space filler for somebody until something better comes along.

If they were willing to pay 295$ for it then that's what it was worth to them.

I think they got a good deal. I like the reverse. An eagle in a wreath with no other distractions.

I would much rather have one with a date (everyone would), but I think $295 was a pretty good deal.

I would rather throw $300 at a better example. Not for me personally. Is $295 a good deal? Well, that would be a matter of opinion. My opinion is no. Not a good deal.

If it was actually a 1794 it would probably be a decent buy. Unfortunately it isn't a 94, it's a 95 O-113/T-14. That makes it questionable.

From my perspective this would be a bad buy no matter what. I don't buy stuff like this. If I can't afford a decent example of something, and by that I mean at least a no problem VG or better, I can do without that date, mint mark or type.

If this could find its way into a PCGS PR-01 holder, it is probably a great buy. PCGS has a "bottom feeder" (my name for it, not PCGS') registry when collectors try to assemble the lowest grade coins possible that can get a grade. Damaged coins or piece that were obviously intentionally worn don't get into the PR-01 or FR-02 holders and therefore don't qualify. Finding these coins is harder than you might think, and some of them bring prices that you would not believe. Don't bring them to me, however. I have zero interest in this.

I looked at my Overton book and saw that there are 10 varieties listed for the 1794 half dollar. I got a headache just thinking about trying to attribute this coin. If the seller did market this as a 1794 half dollar, he had better be able to point out the diagnostics for his claim. Otherwise it's just some hype.

I certainly wouldn't spend $300 on a coin devoid of so much detail. I would at least stretch for a minimum Good coin to at least make out the date and a more meat.
