1966: OK, I know in 1966 20¢ was made in London and Canberra. We all know of the Wavvy 20¢ from London, but what about the 'head gap'? I'm honestly not 100% sure what I'm looking for (Rennicks really doesn't show this too well!)...

1981: 20¢ was made in Canberra, Wales and Ottawa. The Ottawa coin is described as 'concave', which I assume refers to the 'flat' areas of the face being curved slightly? Any visible differences between these three? (Or visual difference between the 'concave' and regular?)...

Cheers

Zaggy, With the 1966, the head gap refers to where the point of the water swirl either touches the head of the Platypus or stops short of touching it.

Looking at the Platypus' head, on the right side, just above where its' bill joins its' head, there's the point of the water swirl referred to.

I haven't got my head around the 1981 thing with concave field yet. I think it must become less noticeable as the coin gets older.

I would also be interested in the 1981 varieties but I haven't bothered really looking as yet. What is the variety with the dot somewhere? Can someone please explain and/or show a picture?

Believe it may be the 1981 R dot,[dot above R] you are referring to. From memory it is a filled diechip. I have never seen one, and I can't remember which mint it was possibly the RAM, but don't hold me to that.

The 3-1/2 claw is from the Canadian mint and has fishtailing to the text on the obverse side. If the text is flat based it is likely to be a diefill coin, if the claw looks like a 3-1/2 claw, and usually under magnification the remnants of the claw is visible. The text is closer to the rim and is flat.

The Canberra coin has detail to the Queens eyebrows, and the rim of the coin appears to be square to the fields. The platypus' nostrils are larger and deeper.

The Wales coin has a rim that tapers towards the fields while the Queens eyebrows are less defined (bushy). The nostrils are smaller and shallower, and the claw that would be the 1/2 claw for the Canadian coin seems to be sharper at the tip.

The dot over the R is just that, a coin that has a small dot directly above the R in AUSTRALIA. I do not remember where this coin was minted, but the RAM rings a bell. Cheers.

ps, the differences between the Canberra coin and the Wales one are subtle indeed for UNC coins and difficult to tell on circulated ones. Happy hunting.
