The key still works perfect to lock and unlock the box. Then the lid slides off and their are slots for the steel printing plates. I have 2 steel plates that fit in the box. The copper plate must be something different because it is much bigger with its border (doesn't fit in box), and the back doesn't have a hole for a bolt to be screwed in to the printing press. It was kept in the cardboard envelope with the old ink writing on it. In the old Haxby obsolete book all notes from this bank (Rockland Maine) are SENC (Surviving Examples Not Confirmed). Any information on value, who to contact, how to sell it would be appreciated. Is there anything like this that has ever sold before for a reference? Thank you! I got it from an elderly man set up at a coin show that used to collect everything Maine because he lived their.

Cool item picc!

I checked the Heritage Auction archive, they've sold Obsolete printing plates but NONE for the state of Maine.

You might contact Heritage and see what they say. Another place to contact would be Stacks Bowers. I would take my time (if you can) on deciding which avenue to take when selling this as it is such a unique and potentially valuable archive.

You should contact Q. David Bowers, he can provide all necessary information on this subject..

I don't want to post his email here, but his contact info can be found on Coin World and other sites..

If this was pre-2009, I would be looking to purchase this, but thanks to Lawyers Fees associated with a 13 Month long divorce proceedings, it has erased my retirement savings..

Good Luck

Online I can only find the generic info at stacks .com email. Does he have a more specific or personal email I can send these pictures to him?

This is an outstanding find -- thanks for sharing! I went looking online for any example of a Rockland Bank obsolete note and came up empty. I'd love to see a printed note from one of these plates.

As there are four slots in the box for plates and you have the $2 and the $10 plates, my guess is there was originally a $5 and a $1 or a $3 that made up this set. Obsolete notes were typically printed in sheets of four. It looks like the $20 notes were printed individually and probably less of them, since copper plates had a shorter lifespan.

Would you mind getting out your magnifying glass to see if you can read the name of the engraving/printing house that produced these? Usually this is found along the bottom frame of the note, sometimes the side. If you can identify the bank note firm, it may narrow down the time period the plates were created.

Perhaps you should contact Coin World editor Steve Roach http://www.coinworld.com/contact-us...alStaff.html and see if he will pass your inquiry on to Q. David Bowers. I haven't found a more specific email for him and that old Stacks email form doesn't work.

Wow ... that's an incredible find indeed. I have zero expertise on the topic ... but believe this is the real deal and those obsolete note plates might be worth a lot to a collector who specializes in such items.

Best of wishes with the eventual sale.

Hopeful you keep us posted on how it goes for you.

I am with ArrowsandRays, wicked (we have that in NB too).

A lad at our coin club is from Maine and almost exclusively collects paper money.
I will have to get a hold of out club's president and see if I can get an email for the guy.
I am not sure if he would know what this is but he may very well be a potential buyer. He does the Baltimore shows and all that, big paper guy like I said.

Very nice find.

The last time I emailed Mr.Bowers he was preparing to go to a major show.
I ended up talking to him in person at the show.

Well, I consigned it to Heritage Auctions. It will be in this September's Long Beach coin show in California in the Signature Auction. It was estimated to start bidding around $3,000-$5,0000. Wish me luck!
