I have a $5 note from the First National Bank of Olean.
The serial # on the upper right corner is R776782E which is entirely out of character for a serial number and the serial # on the lower left corner is 22851 which would appear to be correct.
Also the Charter # is preceded by an E.
The charter # is 1887.
Any idea what is up with this?

Not unusual.

The serial number on the lower left is the official serial number, and the letter "E" is for the geographical region of the charter. E for East, S for South, and so on. I've heard the reason behind the upper right serial number, but I don't recall the story at this time.

Upper right blue number is the Treasury serial number.

Lower left blue number is the individual bank serial number.

The two identical larger blue numbers are that particular National bank's charter number.

...and the "E" preceding the charter number is your bank's regional designation letter. That letter was used by the Treasury for ease in sorting when notes were returned for redemption.

Your note is typical - the number below the portrait is the "Bank Serial Number" and the number in the upper right is the "Treasury Serial Number". Generally speaking, the latter is of little interest to most collectors.

to the CCF!
