A friend dropped off a bunch of coins his Dad left him.
He has a bunch of Australian coins, which I am quickly learning about. Actually I have never seen an Australian coin in my life.

I found this one cent that seems to be a double die error.
I have no others to compare it to and I'm having a heck of a time finding any thing online about this coin in general.

Please let me know your thoughts if this is truly an error or common thing for this coin.

If I hit the jackpot, let me know too so I don't just toss it back in the jar with the rest

They are a little blurry, but you see it very well.

Thanks
Dan

I'm no expert but I think it might be what you know as Machine Doubling.

Now that we have come to that conclusion.
Rare, common?
Toss it in a 2x2 or send it to PCGS?

Your thoughts please.
Thanks

Machine Damaged (MD)

Relatively common and confused with actual doubling. Here's a link to help explain: http://doubleddie.com/144801.html

Some years more than others; 1972 is a common year for extreme MD and since we have a number of legitimate doublings for the date (Lincoln Cents), the question is often asked when an example of extreme MD pops up for the date.

It is Machine Doubling and I would say a little scarce but in a bulk lot you'd find a few. All the early decimal dates 1966,67,68,69 seem to be affected and don't carry much of a premium, but who cares when you are a true collector.

I sometimes collect MD coins, but only if it's pretty spectacular.

In this case I'd send it back where it came from as they no longer circulate or keep it as a curiosity but definitely not worth sending to PCGS.
