IMHO, in your example, it depends on the intent.

I say NT: if you left them there, and maybe forgot about them, then found them later.

I say AT: if you did it for the purpose of having them tone

Again, just my opinion... I am sure others will chime in with good comments!

I think setting your coins out in the open air & hoping they tone is NT. If you put some sort of chemical on them first, or set them in the open air of your oven at low heat, or something similar then they are AT.

I have to agree with the second response.

"Intent" has nothing to do with it...the exact same process can't be called both natural *or* artificial depending on whether you claim you wanted it to happen or not.

If you did it on purpose the coins will tone with a horrible color. But if you didn't do it on purpose they will tone fantastically.
And the more you discuss it in front of the coins, they will know and turn to something even worse.
Of course the type of shelf makes all the difference in the world you know. If a kitchen shelf, it should not have toned since a wife would have found it and spent it before anything could happen.

Artificial toning can be loosely defined as the intent to create or accelerate toning for profit.
Natural toning is color that was aquired from the storage enviroment either provided directly by the mint (mint-bags or paper rolls) or through an excepted (by our hobby) storage medium such as albums or envelopes. Nothing is added to accelerate the process except time.
Miterman, the coins that you left on the self are NT......there was no intent to accelerate the process for profit.

Thanks for your responses, I didn't think they should be AT as I didn't put on any chemicals or bake them. I'll have to post some pics.
